Few things say autumn quite like the smell of roasted chestnuts.
On October 17 and 18, Oprtalj celebrates the season with Kestenijada – the Chestnut Festival, the first and only event of its kind in Istria dedicated entirely to chestnuts. Throughout the weekend, chestnuts appear in just about every form imaginable: roasted, boiled, in savoury dishes, desserts, cakes and even ice cream. Visitors can also try hunting and mushroom stews, along with other seasonal specialties. The festival takes place across several locations in Oprtalj, with live music, educational exhibitions, creative workshops, performances and entertainment for children adding to the programme. Add a glass of young wine, some fresh autumn air and the hilltop setting of Oprtalj, and you have a pretty good recipe for an October day in inland Istria.
