Escape rooms are nothing new. You’ve probably escaped from a prison, solved a murder mystery or unlocked a hidden laboratory. But how often do you get to solve puzzles inside a real 13th-century castle?
That’s exactly what makes Escape Castle Morosini-Grimani in Svetvinčenat so special. Instead of being locked inside a single room, your playground is an entire medieval castle. Towers, an armoury, the dungeon and the castle courtyard all become part of one giant adventure inspired by real Istrian legends and historical events. How It Works
Before the game begins, you’ll receive a short introduction to the story. Around 300 years ago, according to local legend, an unknown knight won the great tournament in Svetvinčenat. Instead of claiming his prize and revealing his identity, he disappeared, leaving behind seven knightly trials and a mystery that has never been solved. Your mission is to become part of that legend.
Working in teams of two to five players, you’ll explore every corner of Morosini-Grimani Castle while solving seven different challenges representing the virtues of a true knight: loyalty, bravery, faith, justice, caution, knowledge and perseverance. Each solved puzzle brings you one step closer to uncovering the castle’s greatest secret. The game usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes and is suitable for families, groups of friends and anyone who enjoys solving mysteries together. Advance booking is required, and the game is available in several languages, including English, German, Italian, French, Dutch, Slovenian and Croatian.
This Isn’t an Escape Room. It’s an Escape Castle.
The biggest surprise is the scale. Most escape games confine you to four walls. Here, you’re constantly moving. One moment you’re climbing one of the castle towers, the next you’re searching the armoury for clues before descending into the dungeon to solve the next challenge. Every space feels different, and because the puzzles are spread throughout the castle, the experience feels much more like an adventure than a traditional escape room.
The setting makes all the difference. You’re not surrounded by props designed to look medieval—you are inside one of the best-preserved Venetian castles in Istria. Don’t rush back to your holiday home once you’ve finished your quest. Svetvinčenat is one of the prettiest small towns in central Istria, and its Renaissance square deserves a leisurely stroll. If you have time, sit down for a coffee overlooking the castle and watch the square come to life. During the summer months, the castle frequently hosts concerts, medieval events and festivals, so it’s worth checking the programme before your visit—you might end up extending your adventure well into the evening.
