How to Spend a Rainy Day in Rabac

June 3, 2026

·

Rain on vacation is never ideal — especially when you planned on spending the entire day swimming. But honestly? A rainy day in Rabac and Labin can end up becoming one of the most memorable parts of your trip. Because once the beaches empty out and the pace slows down, you finally get to experience a different side of Istria — the one locals know best.

Head Up to Labin Old Town

If rain puts your beach plans on hold, head up to Labin old town. Most of the sights are close to one another, making it easy to spend a few hours exploring without worrying too much about the weather.  And luckily, there’s plenty to do once you get there.

One thing many visitors don’t realize is how deeply mining shaped this entire region. At the Labin National Museum, you can explore the history of Labin through archaeology, local traditions, and most famously — its mining heritage. One of the most interesting parts of the museum is the reconstructed mining tunnel in the basement, where you can actually walk through a replica of the old mines and get a feeling of what life looked like for generations of miners in this area. And once you start learning about it, you suddenly notice how much the mining history is still part of Labin’s identity today.

While walking through the old town, it’s also worth stepping inside the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Birth Church, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Labin. Even if you’re not usually someone who visits churches while traveling, the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful details inside make it worth a short stop.

Wander Through Galleries, Wine & Olive Oil Tastings

Rain also gives you the perfect excuse to slow down and explore places you might otherwise walk past too quickly. Art Gastro Galerie Im Palast Negri is one of those places — part gallery, part wine bar, part hidden old-town atmosphere. Besides local wines, you can also taste Istrian olive oils there, which are something locals are incredibly proud of. Places like this are what make Labin feel creative and alive beyond summer beaches.

Rainy Days Are Perfect for Konobas

Rainy weather and Istrian food are a very good combination. After exploring the old town, there’s nothing better than settling into a warm konoba for a long late lunch or dinner while the rain falls outside. Velo Kafe is one of those places locals have been returning to for years. Sitting right in the heart of the old town, it combines history, comfort, and traditional Istrian atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where coffee quietly turns into dessert, dessert turns into wine and a rainy afternoon suddenly feels a lot more enjoyable.

Take the Mining Story One Step Further

By now, you’ve probably noticed just how important mining was for this part of Istria. If the museum sparked your curiosity and the rain is still keeping you indoors, there’s actually a way to dive even deeper into that story. About a 10-minute drive from Labin old town, in the nearby town of Raša, you’ll find the KOVA Experience — one of the most unique attractions in the area. Rather than simply reading about mining history, this experience lets you step into it. Through interactive exhibits and storytelling, you’ll get a much better understanding of what life was like for generations of miners who helped shape Labin and the surrounding region. It’s immersive, surprisingly engaging, and exactly the kind of activity that turns a rainy afternoon into something memorable.

Slow Down and Get Creative

If you’re already heading towards Raša for the KOVA Experience, consider adding one more stop to your rainy-day itinerary. Rainy days are perfect for slowing down a little, and one of the nicest ways to do that is with a ceramics workshop at Merania Ceramic Manufacture. This family-run ceramic studio has been creating handmade ceramics in Istria for years, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design. Their workshops are relaxed, creative, and surprisingly calming — exactly the kind of activity that fits a slower rainy day mood. And honestly, there’s something special about going home with a souvenir you actually made yourself. A small cup, plate, or bowl that will probably remind you of Rabac every time you see it sitting in your kitchen years later.

If this sounds like your kind of activity, simply book a workshop and get your hands dirty.

And the Best Part? Rain Never Lasts Too Long Here

Summer rain in Istria rarely lasts all day. Usually, after the clouds pass, the sky opens up into something beautiful — soft pink sunsets, golden light over the sea, or sometimes even a rainbow stretching above the coast. And one of the best places to see it is from the viewpoints in Labin old town, looking all the way down toward Rabac and the Adriatic below. So honestly, don’t stress too much if you wake up to rain during your stay. In Istria, even rainy days somehow turn into good memories.
