Subotina: Buzet Goes Back in Time

September 10, 2026

·

For one September weekend, Buzet celebrates its traditions in a very special way.

On September 12 and 13, one of the town’s best-known traditional events returns with local food, music, old crafts and a glimpse into Istrian life as it once was.

Saturday, September 12 — Subotina

Saturday brings Subotina, a traditional folk celebration filled with music, entertainment and plenty of local flavours. One of the highlights is impossible to miss: the preparation of a giant fritaja with truffles, made with 2,026 eggs in a 2.5-metre-wide pan. It has become one of the event’s most recognizable traditions and a fitting way to celebrate Buzet’s strong connection to truffles. Expect a lively atmosphere, local food and plenty happening throughout the day.

Sunday, September 13 — Subotina po starinski

Sunday is when things get especially interesting. During Subotina po starinski, Buzet’s old town steps back in time to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Locals dress in period clothing, traditional music fills the streets and old crafts return to workshops and squares throughout the historic centre. As you walk around, you’ll encounter craftsmen demonstrating skills that were once part of everyday life, from barrel making and shoemaking to weaving, basket making and tailoring. Traditional food, local products and music complete the experience, turning the entire old town into a lively glimpse of Istria’s past.

If you’re curious about Istrian traditions beyond what you can see in museums, this is a very good weekend to visit Buzet.
