Unlike many European destinations where long drives are unavoidable, here you can leave the coast after breakfast, wander through medieval hilltop towns before lunch, taste local wine in the afternoon and be back by the sea in time for sunset. Yes, we know – it’s amazing!
Whether you’re staying for a weekend or a full week, renting a car opens up a completely different side of the peninsula or it’s a plus if you are already here with a car. Vineyards replace beaches, quiet stone villages replace busy promenades, and every winding road seems to reveal another beautiful viewpoint. If you’re wondering where to start, these are three road trips we’d happily do again ourselves.
1-Day Istria Road Trip
East Istria Highlights
Rabac → Labin → Plomin → Brseč → Rabac
Distance: approximately 60 km
If you’re staying in Rabac, this is probably the perfect first excursion. Start your morning in Labin Old Town. Wander through its colourful streets, visit the National Museum or simply enjoy a coffee in Velo Kafe (iconic place locals go to for morning coffee). Labin isn’t a place to rush—it’s somewhere to explore slowly, letting each alley lead you somewhere unexpected.
From there, continue towards Plomin, a tiny medieval village perched above one of the deepest bays on the Adriatic. Most travellers drive straight past it, but those who stop are rewarded with peaceful streets and one of the best panoramic views in eastern Istria. Here you can find “Plominski natpis” the oldest Croatian Glagolitic inscription, from the 11th century, carved on the edge of a late antique.
A little further south lies Brseč, one of the most spectacular villages on the entire peninsula. Walk through the stone streets before heading to the viewpoint beside St. George’s Church, where the sea stretches endlessly towards the islands of Cres and Lošinj. Finish the day back in Rabac with dinner by the waterfront as the sun disappears behind the hills.
2-Day Istria Road Trip
Hilltop Towns & Wine Country
Day One
Motovun → Oprtalj → Grožnjan
This is the classic inland Istria route. Motovun may be famous, but it earns its reputation. Walk along its ancient walls before continuing towards Oprtalj, a quieter hilltop village that many visitors overlook completely. Finish the afternoon in Grožnjan, where art galleries, music drifting through narrow streets and small cafés create one of the most charming atmospheres anywhere in Croatia. Where to sit and chill? truba bar, of course! Stay overnight nearby if you can. Inland Istria becomes wonderfully peaceful once the day visitors leave.
Day Two
Spend the second day exploring the countryside rather than ticking off attractions. Visit a local winery like Vina Franković near Buje, enjoy an olive oil tasting or stop at a family-run konoba for a long lunch such as Konoba Malo selo (approved by Michelin). This is the part of Istria where slowing down feels completely natural. On your way back, consider stopping in Hum—the world’s smallest town where you can enjoy in Aura distillery—or the nearby village of Kotli, famous for its natural pools and waterfalls (and yes, you can bathe here!)

The Ultimate Peninsula Tour
Day One
Explore eastern Istria. Rabac, Labin, Plomin and Brseč offer the perfect introduction to the quieter side of the peninsula, combining history, dramatic coastline and authentic local life.
Day Two
Head inland. Visit Motovun, Grožnjan, Oprtalj and Hum before ending the day with dinner at a traditional konoba surrounded by vineyards. If you’re visiting during autumn, this is also the perfect opportunity to experience truffle season.
Day Three
Discover the western coast. Start in Rovinj, perhaps Istria’s most photographed town, before continuing south to Pula and its remarkably preserved Roman Arena. If time allows, finish your journey at Cape Kamenjak, where rugged cliffs, hidden coves and crystal-clear water provide the perfect farewell to Istria. And while you are there, be sure to visit the Safari bar, we won’t tell you a lot about it, but trust us it has deserved to be in this blog!
Scenic Stops Worth Pulling Over For
Not every highlight in Istria has a sign pointing towards it. Some of the best memories happen when you simply stop the car. A vineyard glowing in the late afternoon sun. (Western Istria) A roadside olive grove. (East Istria) A quiet viewpoint overlooking the Mirna Valley. Or a tiny village café where the owner still serves homemade cakes without anyone checking the time. (Inland) Leave room for these moments—they’re often the ones you’ll remember most.
Local Tips for Driving in Istria
The roads are generally in excellent condition and easy to navigate, but don’t underestimate how often you’ll want to stop. Distances may seem short on the map, yet you’ll constantly come across viewpoints, wineries, local producers and villages worth exploring. Spring and autumn are particularly rewarding seasons for a road trip. The temperatures are pleasant, traffic is lighter and the landscapes are bursting with colour, from wildflowers in April to vineyards glowing gold during harvest. If you’re visiting in summer, start early. You’ll enjoy quieter roads, cooler temperatures and the chance to experience many of these places before the crowds arrive.

An Istria road trip isn’t about covering hundreds of kilometres or rushing from one attraction to the next. It’s about taking the scenic route, stopping whenever something catches your eye and allowing yourself enough time to discover the places that never make it into guidebooks.
